Health of the Sublime - Carrie Fertig

Carrie Fertig is an interdisciplinary artist and maker based in Aberdeenshire. She returns September 12th-18th for a week of Sublime workshops and early holiday shopping as she prepares for the Health of the Sublime exhibition opening at The Barn in Banchory 25th September, running through 24th October, to which you are all invited. Health of the Sublime maps our experience of wellbeing in nature through the lens of climate change and is supported by Creative Scotland. Every day September 12-18th, 10am-5pm Carrie will offer drop-in embroidery on the ten-meter Map of the Sublime, the centrepiece of the exhibition. Learn new skills or share your own. All events are free. In the chancel, Carrie will have a selection of glass and metal ornaments, jewellery, and sculpture for early holiday shopping. Carrie makes many of the ornaments in The Fife Arms shop and some of her glass musical instruments are currently on display in Design and Disability at the V&A Dundee.

3-D Embroidery Workshop Monday evening, 6-8pm 14th September

Come learn or share skills in 3-D embroidery as we add three dimensional elements to the map like shells, rocks, and other raised and just-begging-to-be-touched elements. Using the techniques of traditional goldwork, as found on dress military uniforms, we will transform these skills using sustainable planet-friendly materials. Feel free to bring your own scraps of thin leather, thread, or small scraps of fabric, preferably that mean something to you, so we are embroidering a bit of Braemar and you into the map, prior to the exhibition at The Barn.

3-D Flying Stumpwork Embroidery Workshop Wednesday evening, 6-8pm 16th September

Stumpwork is 3-D off the hoop sculptural embroidery and you will learn skills to make berries, bugs, leaves and more to embellish the map of the Sublime. We'll make custom wire frames for each piece, and you will learn how to make highly detailed dragonfly wings, succulent fruits, tiny beasts from the hills, and beauties from your garden come alive in 3-D embroidery just in time to be included in the exhibition.
